Intent – Art and Design
Intent
At Binley Woods Primary School we acknowledge that Art and Design skills learnt here will be a vital tool in many professions: from engineers to surgeons, architects to therapists, scientists to graphic designers. In addition, Art and Design provides skills that can be used a benefit to mental health and wellbeing throughout life. In our school, we value the Art and Design curriculum as an important part of children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Our Art and Design curriculum provides the opportunities to explore, develop and extend specific skills using a range of media and materials.
The design of the curriculum is underpinned by our values. It aims to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. In this way children are able to develop their creativity and express themselves in a variety of contexts and forms.
Aims
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
- produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
- become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design techniques
- evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
- know about the significance of great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical and cultural development of their art forms.
