Autumn Term

In English this half term, we will be reading a variety of exciting books and newspaper reports. Our introductory text is Archie’s War by Marcia Williams which is a diary of a child’s time through World War 1. This will be coupled with looking at newspaper reports as we start our first writing unit on journalistic writing. This will be followed by a unit on biography and autobiography where we will be looking at a variety of biographies and autobiographies but also ‘Boy’ by Roald Dahl, ‘Brown Girl Dreaming’ by Jaqueline Woodson and Katherine Johnson who they will be familiar with from last year. The children will be given lots of practise to develop their formal writing styles and practise different sentence types. They will have the opportunity to write an autobiography from the perspective of their future selves. All of this will be linked to their theme learning where they will write a newspaper report about the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand and they will look at the life of child soldiers through their biographical writing.

Reading:

Reading, as always, will be a crucial part of the children’s learning. The children will have a variety of reading lessons this year, whole class comprehension lessons, and AR quizzes. We also encourage children to read for pleasure in the classroom as well as at home.

SPAG:

Spelling will continue to be taught using our No Nonsense Spelling program. The children will be taught new spelling patterns from the 5-6 word list, revise words from the 3-4 list and they be expected to apply this through all their writing and check their own errors regularly. There will be a greater emphasis on the children learning their own personal errors and they will be shown good learning techniques in school which they need to use in their own time to catch up on any gaps they may have. Grammar and punctuation skills will mostly be taught through the text type they are writing about, what is relevant to that text type and the targets they need to work on. Earlier skills such as basic punctuation, sentence cohesion and using some varied openers to their sentences will be taught and encouraged from the beginning. The children will also be encouraged to use SPAG.com to revise grammar test techniques. Their logins are written in their reading records. Please support your child where you can.

In Maths, we will begin the term by focusing on place value. The first unit is about integers and decimals where the children will develop their understanding of both large numbers and decimals. This unit will also give them a chance to hone their mental arithmetic and calculation skills using whole numbers and decimals. This is the time for children to ensure that they know all their times tables facts so they can use them within calculations and problem solving.

For those that still don’t know their times tables, they need to put a small amount of time on a regular basis to learn them. I will show them techniques in school.

Our driver theme this term is all about World War 1. The children will learn about the causes of the First World War and how the conflict escalated. They will learn about where the trench battles took place and what a soldier’s life in the trenches would have been like. The children will learn about the start of rationing and how the Great War was viewed at home. This will lead into their work on World War II.

This half term, in Science, the children will be learning about light in our world. We launched the project with a practical lesson making periscopes on transition day. The children will understand how light travels and the materials it can travel through. They will conduct experiments on the length of shadows and learn about how light can be split and bent.

This term the children will be learning skills to support them to play football. They will also be learning the skills of Tag Rugby. These lessons will be on Tuesday and Thursday.

In Religious Education we will focus on the enquiry ‘What do organised worldviews have to tell us about what truth is and where it might be found?’. The children will explore the idea of truth and how this can vary through the lens of different worldviews.

In PSHE, the children will consider many aspects of the unit ‘Being Me In My World.’ During this unit, the children will consider things like their hopes, aspirations and goals.

Our first unit in computing will be online safety followed by learning how to use and generate spreadsheets.

Learning with parents: Much of our maths (and some English) homework and any online learning will tap into the resources on this site. Your child will have had a login sent to a parent email address. Please ensure they are used to logging on and can do this independently. The videos are an excellent way of seeing how they learn maths concepts in school, so you can support your child with assigned topics.

This website has LOTS of age appropriate maths resources and they have produced home learning packs for each year group with helpful videos and activities for each day of home learning.

Times Table Rock Stars – your child has an individual log in for this.

This is a story based maths game which your child can log into with their TT Rock stars log ins.
